Rapper and reality TV star Nelly is facing felony drug charges after being arrested in Tennessee on Saturday.
Tennessee
Highway Patrol said in a news release that Nelly, whose real name is
Cornell Haynes, was pulled over about 9.20am because the bus he was
riding in failed to display a U.S. Department of Transportation and
International Fuel Tax Association sticker.
Upon searching the vehicle, Highway Patrol found methamphetamines, marijuana and handguns.
The 40-year-old hitmaker was released from jail after paying $10,000 bond later the same day.
According to
the release, the trooper smelled marijuana when they reached Nelly's
bus, giving them probable cause to search the vehicle.
Six
people were aboard and one identified as Brian Jones, 44, a convicted
felon who was also charged for possession of a handgun.
When
troopers searched the sleeper area on the bus, they found five rocks
that tested positive for meth, as well as a small amount of marijuana
and drug paraphernalia.
In
a statement, the rapper's lawyer stated: 'Nelly was one of several
individuals that was on a tour bus that was stopped and searched while
traveling through Tennessee.
'In fact, there had been 15-20 people that had access to the bus prior to the stop.
'Allegedly,
a small quantity of contraband was discovered during the routine
search. We are extremely confident that when the facts come out, Nelly
will not be associated with the contraband that was allegedly
discovered.'
